Building Blocks For a Stronger Nation

Freedom

Freedom is a very important and long-standing value, but even it has a social component. If certain people were never trapped or enslaved by other people then there would be no need for such a word. We'd all be free always so make no mistake. Freedom has intrinsic value because it represents a person's right to live without being controlled by others. It promotes the idea that if a person is not hurting anyone else then they should be left alone to live how they see fit. However if we dig a little deeper, the moral ground that this value rests on acknowledges that it's wrong to take away a person's right to freedom, but what does it say about a person not using this freedom to do the right thing? Freedom demands that a person has the right to do the right thing? Being controlled or enslaved by others is wrong because it prevents us from being able to do this. Freedom is not a selfish privilege to do whatever you want even if it hurts others or the planet. There's no value in that. If you don't believe in doing the right thing then you don't truly believe in freedom. You're just trying to use the value in the word for your own selfish gain.
